Lesson 14 - BUILDING ON A SOLID FOUNDATION OF GODLY CHARACTER PART THREE

by Samuel Jeanrenaud

Sharon and I love to sing the song that goes like this, “Let us know, Let us know the LORD, His going forth is as sure as the dawn. He will come to us as the showers, as the spring rain that waters the Earth. Let us know, let us know the LORD.”

(Hosea 6:3)

Definition of Knowledge – Comes from the Greek Word, ginosko, which means “to be taking in knowledge, to come to know, to recognize and understand.” The implication of this kind of knowledge is experiential, personal, and real in content. Webster defines knowledge as “the act, fact or state of knowing, awareness, or understanding.” Knowledge also implies intimacy (as in marriage).

Out of all the 12 disciples, John had the closest and most intimate relationship with Jesus. He leaned on His breast, which indicated the kind of relationship and confidence he had in Jesus.

* A disciple is to keep on learning. And, in this lesson we are going on with our character qualities of adding to our faith, knowledge. Last week we talked about adding virtue to our faith. Now, we are adding knowledge. Jeremiah 9:23-24 says, “Thus saith the Lord, let no the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord which exercises loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the Earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.”

Notice that is says let a man NOT boast in other areas, like the wise man in his wisdom, the mighty in his might, or the rich man in his riches; but, let him that boasteth boast in this, that he understands and knows the Lord; that I am the Lord that exercises loving-kindness, judgment and righteousness in the Earth. For, because in these things I delight says the Lord.

1. Psalm 90:17 states, “Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us; and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.” The word to establish means to prop up, to fix, to bond, and to stabilize (sterizo – to prop up and to make firm).

2. Peter was called of the Lord to strengthen or establish the brethren. (Luke 22:32)

3. Paul was called to establish the saints in Rome (Romans 1:11). “For I long to see you that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established…”

Some life principles of knowing the Lord include:

1. Repentance (Mark 1:15 and Psalm 51) “Create in me a clean heart, O God.”

2. Humility (I Peter 5:5-6 and James 4:10) “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

3. Seeking the Lord’s face (Amos 5:6) “Seek the Lord and you shall live.”

4. Walk the talk (Ephesians 4:1) “Walk worthy of the Lord.”

5. (Colossians 3:9-10) “Put off the old man with his deeds. And put on the new man which is renewed in knowledge, after the image of Him that created him.”

6. We are being changed by beholding the glory of the Lord. (II Corinthians 3:18)

CONCLUSION –

Moses prayed, “Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us; and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.” Psalm 90:17
