Lesson Five – A LIFE OF GOOD WORKS by Jeff Tyler

“You were not delivered by your own actions; therefore no one should boast. For we are of God’s making, created in union with the Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) for a life of good actions already prepared by God for us to do.” Ephesians 2:9-10

The fourth major nutrient and vitamin we need in the Spirit is a life of action and works. There is something about doing something with God that causes trust to increase and growth in many ways.

I want to qualify works. Works have nothing whatsoever to do with your salvation. You do works because of two reasons. You want to, and Scripture commands us to.

Matthew 16:27 / John 14:15-21

Scripture is clear that we are saved by grace as a gift from God by simply believing on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah, and making Him Lord of our lives daily. You can do absolutely nothing to earn your salvation. This is the simplicity and beauty of the Gospel message. John 3:16

There are many great passages in Romans chapters 3, 4, 9, and 11 about salvation by grace. We encourage you to study those. And Galatians 2:16 is an amazing memory verse in this regard.

So what are works? These are good things, righteous things, that we do for others or God’s Kingdom. And Scriptures does say that we will be judged on our works for certain crowns when we get to Heaven in Corinthians and Revelation.

James has a lot to say about works in the Bible. Since Jesus said that “out of the heart, the mouth speaks”, James teaches that out of our true faith, we will act. It seems the closer we get to Jesus in our walk, the more we want to do things. These are works or things we would do in the Kingdom.

Works can be described on two levels. First, there are commands in the written word that we are to follow. Second, we must find our destinies and what we are supposed to do with our lives in God’s Kingdom. What has He called me to? Our lives have specific purpose. From the Scripture at the top, we can see that we were created for good works. God has a practical and specific plan to work out in all our lives.

Works, for you right now, may seem small. They could range from anything like being an usher at church or a prayer warrior. Your works could be support staff or clerical. Later on, you may be promoted spiritually to be an Evangelist or a Worship Leader. The bottom line on this topic is DO SOMETHING as the Lord leads, whether great or small – DO SOMETHING. Don’t just sit for years and never do anything with the gifts God has given you. Works can be private or radically public.

Also, do not fall into the trap of the mentality that we do things for God. We do not do things for God, we do things with God. We literally partner with Him, as we see Him or sense Him doing things. Jesus only did what He saw the Father already doing.

John 8:28

As you grow in the Lord, and if you grow properly, God has a mighty promise for you. You can partner with Him in this!

“Yes, indeed! I tell you that whoever trusts in Me will also do the works I do! Indeed, he will do greater ones, because I am going to the Father. In fact, whatever you ask for in My Name, I will do; so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask for something in My Name, I will do it.” John 14:12-14

So we can see that we need all four nutrients and vitamins to grow in the Lord properly. We all need the Word, Prayer, Fellowship, and to do something with what God has given us….
